Good sense is the most evenly distributed thing in the world, for each person thinks they are so well supplied with it that even those who are hardest to please in any other matter do not usually desire more of it than they already have.<\/i><\/p>\n

In my daily life, I often hear phrases like: \u201cIf you fall for Phishing scams, it\u2019s because you don\u2019t have common sense,\u201d or \u201cYou just need common sense to stay safe online,\u201d and countless other variations that all share this seemingly grand \u201cCommon Sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

It seems like this sense is seen as the magical solution to all information security risks<\/b>\u2014something that so many seek (unsuccessfully, now and forever).<\/p>\n

However, experience has shown me that this isn\u2019t the case, and that it appears this common sense\u00a0is not as common as its name suggests<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s start from the beginning, as common sense dictates<\/h3>\n

After reading a few definitions of common sense\u00a0[3]<\/a>\u00a0[4]<\/a>\u00a0[5]<\/a>, it\u2019s clear that this is not a scientific concept but rather a philosophical one, and\u00a0there are as many definitions as there are authors who write about it.<\/b><\/p>\n

Generally speaking, common sense seems to be what most people think or know about something\u2014essentially a kind of \u201capplied common knowledge<\/b>.\u201d For example, the reader knows that if they put their hand too close to the fire, it will get burned. That\u00a0is<\/span>seems to be<\/i>\u00a0common sense.<\/p>\n

Now, were you born with common sense?<\/p>\n

If there\u2019s one thing all definitions agree on, it\u2019s that common sense varies between people, families, cities, and countries, and that\u00a0it is learned throughout life from various sources<\/b>, with personal experience being the main one.<\/p>\n

When do we apply it?<\/h3>\n

Every time we make a judgment,\u00a0our<\/i>\u00a0common sense plays a role in our decision.<\/p>\n

Drawing on our experience and general knowledge of a given situation, common sense will provide us with the simplest answer to make the most correct, simple, and immediate decision\u2014according to it<\/b>.<\/p>\n

Returning to information security<\/h3>\n

People who say that common sense is needed to protect information might be right\u2014speaking from\u00a0their own<\/b>\u00a0common sense, which\u00a0is not the same<\/b>\u00a0as everyone else’s.<\/p>\n

Those responsible for information security who expect, for example, their users to rely on common sense to avoid Phishing scams, must understand that\u00a0for their users, common sense does NOT indicate<\/b>\u00a0that an email attachment might be dangerous, just to name one case.<\/p>\n

In fact, I would argue that common sense, in most societies,\u00a0actually leads people to engage in unsafe behaviors when it comes to information protection.<\/b><\/p>\n

So, does common sense have no use in the world of security?<\/h3>\n

I think it\u2019s a great idea to aim for common sense to drive secure behavior, and it could be a powerful weapon\u00a0(though not the only one)<\/i>\u00a0against information security risks within the organization.<\/p>\n

But as mentioned, the organization\u2019s security officer must build this common sense\u00a0[6]<\/a>\u00a0by providing\u00a0common knowledge<\/b>\u00a0to its users.<\/p>\n

And it\u2019s not as easy as placing a person in front of a fire and showing them that if they put their hand near it, they\u2019ll get burned. But\u00a0with the right resources, it\u2019s possible<\/b>. It\u2019s possible to teach someone about the risks they face, for example, online. It\u2019s possible to test them with real-life scenarios\u00a0so they can gain their own experience in these situations<\/b>. It\u2019s possible to turn secure behavior into a habit and the common sense of each user.<\/p>\n

However, it requires\u00a0time and the use of the correct tools and resources<\/a>\u00a0to achieve this, and we cannot expect users, through their\u00a0common sense<\/b>, to automatically become a strong layer of security for the organization.<\/p>\n
